Here’s a recap of Simpsonville City Council’s May 9 meeting:

Approved: First look at $23.6 million annual budget

Council approved the first of two readings of the $23.6 million operating budget for the 2023-24 fiscal year that involves no tax increases and includes a $2,500 cost of living increase for the city’s nearly 200 employees.

The proposed budget includes spending to accommodate a 4% increase in health insurance costs and commits $250,000 for road resurfacing through the city’s Public Works Enterprise fund.

Among the capital expenditures included in the spending plan are funding for furnishings for the city’s new municipal complex, two new patrol cars and additional body cameras for the police department, and new 800 MHz radios for the fire department.

The new budget represents a 5.6% increase over the 2022-23 budget and reflects an anticipated 7.1% increase in tax revenue for the upcoming fiscal year.

Second and final reading of the budget is expected at the council’s June 13 meeting.
