As the Greenville Symphony Orchestra’s 75th anniversary season draws to a close, the organization will present its final Artists Up Close concerts, beginning May 5 at the Fine Arts Center in Greenville.

The shows at 102 Pine Knoll Drive will focus on the theme of courage and include selections from South Carolina composer Jon Jeffrey Grier’s 2009 work for a piano quintet “Overcoming,” a rhapsody on “We Shall Overcome,” as well as music by Shostakovich, Messaien, Ravel, Joe Hisaishi and Meira Warshauer.

The concerts will also feature performances by the school’s principal strings and woodwinds orchestra musicians as well as GSA soloists:

  • Lisa Kiser – GSO principal keyboard
  • Anneka Zuehlke-King – GSO principal horn

GSO’s Artists Up Close concerts will be held:

  • May 5, 7:30 p.m.
  • May 7, 3 p.m.

“I look forward to this program because it showcases the incredible artistry of our musicians in an intimate venue that allows us as the audience to be close enough to really see and feel what they are creating,” said GSO Executive Director Jessica Satava. “It’s such a different experience than the large-scale concerts with the full orchestra. One of the things that fascinate me about our art form is the stories of the artists and what they go through and sacrifice to become excellent, so I’m excited that we offer this opportunity for the audience to have a relationship with the principal players of the orchestra and hear from them in a much more conversational way.”

Admission is $5 per student, $10 per teacher and $25 for all other attendees.
