EASY DIY AIR DRY CLAY PROJECTS | Boho Wall Hanging, Scandi Plant Hanger, Modern Jewelry Dish

hello YouTube welcome or welcome back to my channel if you're new here my name is Tina and I make videos on lifestyle home decor and DIY projects every single week and today's video is all about DIY projects that you could make with air dry clay and the clay that I'm using for each one of these projects is actually.

This one from Crayola it is an air clay but you could definitely do all these projects with polymer clay as well so you could bake it in the oven rather than using something like this which cares with the air and I'm really just so excited to show you guys all the projects from today's video because I love them all so so much and I really.

Just wanted to make today's video because I miss working with clay I took a ceramics class in college I found it to be so therapeutic and such a good stress reliever so I feel like everyone can use a little bit of that right now if you have a tub of air dry clay laying around or just looking for some DIY project inspo you would definitely like.

Today's video so let's get started with the first project hello from voiceover Tina so for all these projects you will need some air dry clay and the one that I have is just from Crayola that I got off of Amazon this has lasted me at quite some time and it hasn't dried out at all and the last time I opened this was actually in December so I'm really.

Impressed with how well this has lasted and of course before we get into this I had to remove all of my rings so I always keep a little bowl on my craft table so I can store all of my rings while I'm working on DIY projects and I found this to be super helpful so for this first project we're going to be creating a faceplate inspired by a.

Picture that I saw on Pinterest I will link to the original project down below because I think it's important to give credit where credit is due but enough rambling let's get into the project so first I'm going to lay down some parchment paper and then I'm going to grab a handful of the clay and then roll it into a ball with my hands next I'm.

Using a rolling pin to roll the clay flat and yes mine is marble it is from Target and you can make this tray as thick or as thin as you'd like so I'll roll it down to your heart's desire mine is a little bit on the thicker side next I'm going to take my exacto knife and I'm just going to make an egg shape pretty lightly on the clay and then once.

I'm happy with it I'm going to cut it all the way through and remove the excess then to create a little lip on the plate I'm going to roll out some clay into a long coil and the best coiling technique is actually to roll with your hands inwards and move it outwards and you want to move your hands pretty quickly as you're doing this so.

That you get a nice even coil then I'm going to lay the coil on the perimeter of the plate just to see how much I need to cut off and to really insure that it's going to stick on there I'm just going to carefully mold the coil onto the plate making it look as seamless as possible and as I'm going along I'm going to use my paintbrush to try to.

Mesh the two together this really helps to smooth things out and it also really helps if you drag your finger to move the clay from the top portion to the bottom and that way you can make it look super seamless and throughout each one of these projects you're going to notice that water is really going to be your best friend when working with clay.

Because it will really give your pieces a smooth finish and I think that that just looks way more professional and way cleaner moving on to the rest of the plate I'm going to brush the water all over the entire piece to remove all the little bumps and grooves and little marks on the surface I am a bit of a perfectionist so I want it to look as.

Smooth as possible now moving on to the actual face of this plate we're going to create another long skinny coil to make the contour lines of the face and then I'm going to sketch out the face and I'm going to use my exacto knife to do this I'm using a reference photo that I found online and I'm really going to take my time here to create the desired look and.

After that's done I realized that I needed to roll my coils even smaller to fit onto the plate and after that I just laid it on top of the design that I just made and it's totally okay if it doesn't fit the original drawing perfectly but I tried to get it as close as possible after I was happy with how it looked I.

Went in again with my brush and my water to smooth everything out and again I really took my time here so that it would look as nice as possible and after I was done with that I let it dry for at least two full days because this thing was quite thick once it has completely dried you can go ahead and paint it if you would like or you can also seal it.

With something like an acrylic varnish or Model Magic from Crayola but I like the matte look of it so I'm leaving it as is and here is the finished piece all styled up I really love how this piece came out I think it is super minimal and chic and is also so perfect to use as a ring dish or you can even hang this on your wall as a decorative piece so this.

Next piece is inspired by an existing wall hanging that I got from Target a really long time ago and I wanted to recreate this piece because someone had asked where I got it but they don't sell it anymore so I thought it would be a fun DIY to create with air dry clay essentially this hanging is made up of five half circles in varying sizes with.

Different features like cutouts so here I'm drying it out as a guide for when I create all my different pieces first I'm starting off with a ball of clay and then rolling it out with my rolling pin and I'm actually making this a little bit smaller than the original piece that I have so I'm just going to use a glass jar to create my circle shapes and if.

You watch my must-have DIY supplies you know that I like to save all my salsa and pasta jars and they definitely came in handy for this project since we only need five half circles three circles are going to be perfect for all of the pieces I made one circle larger and then two of the circles the same sizes and once those were all cut out I'm going to.

Take a ruler to slice each one in half carefully lift each piece up and start assembling it into the design and for the piece with the cutout I'm going to use my exacto knife to cut out an even smaller half circle within this piece and then for the biggest piece at the top which is just an arch I'm going to create a smaller circle using a.

Container to cut out the inside portion and then for this next step I'm going to place all the pieces onto parchment paper and with my water and clay mixture also known as slip I'm going to brush it on each individual piece and if you have some pieces that have lots of little lines and wrinkles in them the slip is.

Really going to help smooth it all out so make sure that you take time with this step referring back to my sketch I'm going to plan out where I want each hole to be so I use this little pointy tool that I actually got from my Cricut to make the small holes but really you can use anything that you have at home such as a toothpick or a chopstick or.

Even a pen once you're happy with all the pieces you can go ahead and let them dry for 24 hours and after it's dry you can choose to leave it like this for a natural finish or you can go ahead and paint them and I'm going to use acrylic paint to create a dark terracotta color and you can really get creative with this and make the wall hanging in any.

Color that you would like after I did the first coat the color was looking at super purple to me so I ended up adding in a little bit more orange so that I could add warmth back into this color and for the bottom piece I'm going to create three tassels with macrame and here you can see that I'm taking a six.

Millimeter macrame cord and splitting the three strands apart and then I'm also going to take a piece of twine and do this same exact thing and split the three strands apart again so I want the tassels to be quite thin so I'm only going to take two of the macrame strands and fold them in half and then at the top I'm going to take a piece of the.

Twine and tie it super tightly now I'm going to create that top of the tassel and to do this I'm taking the third piece of the macrame cord and I'm going to split that in half then I'm going to wrap it around a couple of times and tie it super tightly and with one of the ends I'm going to pull it straight down so that it actually becomes.

A part of the fringe next I'm going to take a fine tooth brush and you can also use a pet brush here but all you really need to do here is to brush through all of the strands and make sure that each one is splitting apart to create the fringe on the tassel and with the other end of the macrame that we use to tie earlier I'm just going to snip it off of.

The top and there you have it a super cute little tassel I repeated this two more times and I attached each one with a piece of twine and that is all you really need to do for this bottom piece and for the rest of the pieces I'm just going to attach them with pieces of twine and just nodding the back all together you could also use wire here if.

You'd like I found that working with the twine was a little bit difficult since my holes were very very small so I had to do the shoelace hack with a piece of washi tape in order to thread each one through the hole and once you have that all strung together your wall hanging is complete this is such an easy project that can be customized to any color.

Palette and you can really design your own wall hanging by creating different shapes and sizes with each of this so I think you can have so much fun creating one of these I think this would also look really amazing if you spray painted it gold or even painted this in a rainbow color palette I think that this would look so amazing in so many.

Different ways and I hope that you guys like this project as much as I like creating it alright so we're on the last DIY project and of course I had to do something plant related so this last project is inspired by air plant hangers that I've seen previously at craft shows and I also think that this is the easiest project in this video so I hope.

That you guys like this one like the other two projects I'm going to start off by rolling out my clay with my rolling pin and with this project you want the clay to be a little bit more on the thicker side then with the ruler I'm going to use that to cut the clay into a rectangle then to flatten the edges of the clay a little bit more I just pushed.

It against my desk a little bit to shape it out and then I moved on to smoothing out the surface and again water is your best friend here so I'm using a foam brush with some water to smooth out the surface of the clay and if you get any air bubbles in the clay like I did here go ahead and cut a small slit in the bubble and that should get rid of it and.

As I working on this I realize how messy was getting and I totally forgot to put on parchment paper so here I'm going to put the clay back onto another piece of parchment paper and continued working on it I also noticed that the rectangle was a little bit too wide so I cut it down a little bit more with my ruler and the.

Piece I ended up creating was about five inches by two inches after I was done smoothing everything out I laid the piece onto a jar and that's going to be a really nice base to create a curved shape but you can really use any cylindrical object that you have at home to do this next I'm going to add a hole in the middle of each end of the.

Rectangle and to make your life easier make sure you do this before adding it onto the jar then after letting that dry for about 12 hours the clay hardened a little bit more and then I went in to smooth the other side of the clay with some more water and since the clay was a little bit more dry and made it a lot easier to handle so I would definitely.

Recommend for you to wait until it dried a little bit more so that you could smooth out both sides then I let that sit out for another 12 hours until it was completely dry and at this point you can paint it if you'd like but I was going for a really natural scandi vibe so I just left the clay as is next I'm just going to use some twine to thread.

Through the holes and knot it down at the bottom and to give it a bit of a scandi ride I added in three wooden beads to each thread to finish it off I'm going to knot the top and it's ready to be hung I absolutely love how this came out I think it is just so simple and so cute and can fit in so many different spaces depending on what color.

You paint it but one disclaimer I would like to add is if you are planning to mist or air plant on this hanger please make sure that you seal the clay with a varnish but in my case this is actually a fake air plant so I skipped that extra step alright so those were all the projects for today's video let me know in the comments down below which one was.

Your favorite and if you're planning to make any of these I think that my favorite one has to be the most simple one where did it go which is this piece and I feel like anyone can really make this and maybe it's my favorite because it was literally the easiest one it took the least amount of time and it holds a plant so I just can't not.

Love this piece and I really hope that this video inspires you guys to try some DIY clay projects yourself because honestly I had so much fun at making each one of these pieces alright so I'm gonna close out this video please like the video if you liked it and please also subscribe if you haven't already we are so so close to 10,000 subscribers.

Which is honestly mind-blowing and I think that we're gonna reach it by the time the next video goes up so I'm definitely going to have some sort of giveaway I think I will do a gift card and then maybe a piece that I make only if you guys are interested in that someone suggested it in my last video so make sure you subscribe and watch the.
